In Scotland we often use the word DODDIE as a first name; for example we talk about DODDIE WEIR.
What does the word DODDIE stand for?.
Meaning of a name.?
Doddie is used as a nickname for George. An actual 'doddie'. is a breed of bull with no horns, eg Aberdeen Angus. Maybe originally there was a bull of a man named George.
Reply:It means your father owns Harrods.
Reply:All I know of is George "Doddie" Weir, but I have no idea why "Doddie" is used!
Have a star ;)
Reply:Google 'etymology'. In this case 'etymology names' to find.sites like source 1. (below). Etymology is the science of language history.
I found Dodie (not exactly the same indeed) mentioned in source 2 as a pet form of Dorothy.
Comments for Dorothy: English form of DOROTHEA. This name was used by Lyman Frank Baum for the central character in his fantasy novel 'The Wizard of Oz'.
Source 3 and 4 explains Dorothea in depth:
Feminine form of the Late Latin name Dorotheus, from the Greek 螖蠅蟻慰胃蔚慰蟼 (Dorotheos), which meant "gift of God" from Greek 未蠅蟻慰谓 (doron) "gift" and 胃蔚慰蟼 (theos) "god". Dorothea was the name of two saints, including the patron saint of Prussia. DOROTHEA (Given by God, Godsent) is the name Theodora with the elements reversed.
A funny coincidence is that the Chinese use this name too, source 4. (ignore most entries on this page - they are misleading)
