Agap膿 (IPA: [蓱藞g蓱.p蔚] or IPA: [藞蓱g蓱藢p蔚]) (Gk. 伪纬维蟺畏 [a藞桑a.pi]), is one of several Greek words translated into English as love. The word has been used in different ways by a variety of contemporary and ancient sources, including Biblical authors. Many have thought that this word represents divine, unconditional, self-sacrificing, active, volitional, and thoughtful love. Greek philosophers at the time of Plato and other ancient authors used the term to denote love of a spouse or family, or affection for a particular activity, in contrast to philia 鈥?an affection that could denote either brotherhood or generally non-sexual affection, and eros, an affection of a sexual nature, usually between two unequal partners. The term agape is rarely used in ancient manuscripts, but was used by the early Christians to refer to the self-sacrificing love of God for humanity, which they were committed to reciprocating and practicing towards God and among one another.

Agape has been expounded on by many Christian writers in a specifically Christian context. Thomas Jay Oord has defined agape as "an intentional response to promote well-being when responding to that which has generated ill-being."
Reply:It means love without self-interest.
Reply:It is a Greek word used to describe love. There are 3 different words for love because there are different kinds of love. Agape, Falaio, and Erros.

Agape is the top of the list because it means God's Love. It is also the word for charity. It is the kind of love that we do not generate but reflect, like the moon reflects the suns rays. It sometimes looks like the moon is shining on us, but it is really the sun's rays redirected by the moon that we see.

The second is Falaio. This is family love and love for friends, even love for ice cream.

The third is Erros. This is erotica. Not at all like Agape or Falaio it is driven by passion of the moment. It is the off the wall stuff that is mentioned in all those unwanted Emails that keep clogging up our in box.

You have herd the scripture that ends with " These three things but the greatest if Charity." the word charity is Agape. Love could have been used in charity's place with no effect on the meaning of the scripture because they are interchangeable.

The Greek language is a picture language so it gets real technical but it needs to be in order to paint a clear picture, It is also why so many arguments about scripture meaning arise.

I hope I have painted you a clear picture of Agape.
