I like this muslim arabic name and I am considering naming my daughter Sahira, but I am confused as to the meaning of it, I have read that Sihr means magic and Sahira can mean enchantress but I have also read that Sahira means wakeful, eloquent...so which one is the true meaning...thanks

Muslim baby girls name Sahira- does it mean magic/enchantress or wakeful?
go to babynames.com,the name meanings are there.

I checked, and Sahirah means wakeful.

BTW I know there's 2 h's
Reply:1. Sahira : ( the H is pronounced a bit rough and more unlike the actual H) : It means a charming girl, who is striking and makes everyone around her adore her unbelievable beauty.

2 .Sahira : ( the H in this name is pronounced more delicately than the first one) : it means a girl who is a wake at night.

Both are nice names but the first has a sweeter meaning. Great choice though!

Good luck!
Reply:the idea behind an "enchantress" is related to magic.

one who enchants puts a spell on things/people so they are related and they more then likely share the same root.

for example in hebrew the word for Knee, berech comes from the root "bless or praise" because when we kneel to pray to G-d we are on our knees even though neither knee or the verb bless or praise have an obvious connection until you relate the action of kneeling in prayer to saying blessings.

consider blood, earth and adam as well

adamah for earth, dam for blood and adam the name all come from a common root because adam was made from earth and adam has blood running through his veins. and what color is that blood? it is red which is adom in hebrew...see how roots connect words?

it is a very pretty name but you may also consider that enchantress (if you are muslim) may not be a good name for a little girl. its like naming her Jezebel or a boy Cain.

being an enchantress is not a "good" thing.

but to each his own.

in judaism we believe that you should not give your child a name that has a meaning that may be "negative" because the child can be held down why that meaning. you should also consider nicknames and names that can be made from the name to tease the child and refrain from choosing a name that could bring that on (ie Richard - no offense to those out there named Richard but Dick is not always a fun "nickname").
Reply:in indo pakistan it mostly means enchantress.
